Cashgate arrests take centre stage scandal as ACB sounds coy on arresting JB

In its quest to get to the root of
what transpired in the Cashgate
scandal which saw up to MK20.3
Billion lost through fraud, the
Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) has
arrested several top notch
figures in the country on
miscellaneous charges.
In an interview with Malawi24,
ACB`s spokesperson, Egrita Ndala
was quick to rule out the arrests
are arising in a way of political
witch hunting as most of the
arrested were top officials in the
previous regime, arguing that
the body is not arresting people
for `fun`.
According to
Ndala, reports
which indicate
that former
president Joyce
Banda under
whose era the
scandal got
revealed, is on
the `list` to be
arrested by the
body are not
real saying it
has not issued
any report to
the media on
who it intends
to arrest.
“We are not arresting people for
fun; perhaps let us not mention
people we will arrest. Everyone
who we have in our
investigations will be arrested.
However, this is not something
we are doing out of fun` Ndala
told Malawi24 at a time when

She added “We cannot say more
on arresting Joyce Banda or
anybody else. We are arresting

On Monday, the ACB arrested
Peoples Party senior member,
Hophmally Makande, on charges
of conspiracy to defraud
government in relation to Section
35 of the Corrupt Practices Act.

Committee, Nelson Bophani was
reported to have been on the
verge on getting arrested as well
with other looming arrests

ACB pegged the sum of the
money lost within the period of
three months (April-September
2013) at around MK20.3 Billion.
At the moment, the body has
called on Malawians to keep their
fingers crossed saying it will
sustain the strides to have justice
prevail and the law to take its
course on the scandal which saw
Malawi`s donor partners pulling
out aid.
